Pellet fuel grades

Wood pellets are graded chiefly by ash content and consistency: PFI Premium pellets run under 1% ash, Standard up to 2%, and Utility up to 6%. Pellet stove warranties and clean operation generally assume Premium-grade fuel.

Pellets are made of compressed sawdust with no binders; grade differences come from bark content and raw material. Low-ash premium pellets keep burn pots and heat exchangers clean, extend intervals between cleanings, and keep the certified emission performance realistic.

The Pellet Fuels Institute (PFI) standards program prints the grade on the bag. Softwood vs hardwood matters far less for pellets than for cord wood — softwood pellets often have slightly higher heat content and lower ash.

What the grade measures

The PFI standard grades fuel on more than ash, though ash is the headline. Premium requires no more than 1.0% inorganic ash, at most 0.5% fines (the dust that accumulates at the bottom of the bag and in the hopper), a pellet durability index of 96.5 or better, moisture at or below 8%, and chlorides under 300 parts per million. Standard grade relaxes ash to 2.0% and fines to 1.0%; Utility allows up to 6.0% ash and is intended for industrial appliances, not household stoves.

Ash and fines come from the same place: bark, dirt picked up during logging and handling, and the mineral content of the raw material. A mill running clean, debarked sawmill residue produces low-ash pellets; one running whole-tree chips does not. Durability measures whether pellets survive handling without crumbling, which is why a high-durability pellet arrives as pellets rather than as a bag of sawdust.

Chlorides are the specification nobody looks at and the one that quietly destroys hardware. Chlorine in the fuel forms acids in the exhaust that corrode heat exchangers and vent pipe. It is a strong argument for buying fuel that carries an actual PFI grade mark rather than an unqualified “premium” printed by a marketing department.

What high-ash fuel does inside the machine

The arithmetic is stark. A ton of 1% ash pellets leaves about 20 lb of ash; a ton at 3% leaves 60 lb, and Utility grade at 6% leaves 120 lb. That is not just more emptying — it is three to six times as much material passing through a burn pot whose air holes are a few millimetres across.

Two failure modes follow. Silica and potassium in the ash can fuse at burn-pot temperatures into hard glassy clinkers that block the air holes, starve the fire of combustion air, and produce a smoky, lazy flame and eventually a shutdown. And fine ash coats the heat exchanger tubes, where even a thin insulating layer measurably reduces heat transfer into the room while raising flue temperature.

Most pellet stoves that owners describe as broken are stoves with a fouled burn pot and a dirty exchanger. Going from Premium to Standard fuel roughly doubles the cleaning cadence — a burn-pot scrape every day or two rather than weekly — and the certified emission and efficiency performance of the appliance quietly degrades with it.

Choosing, storing, and what not to burn

Softwood pellets typically carry slightly more energy per pound than hardwood, because resin content is higher, and often less ash. But the bigger variable is the specific mill and even the specific production run, not the species: two Premium-grade brands can behave quite differently in the same stove in terms of ash volume, clinkering, and how the flame sits in the pot. Buy a couple of bags before committing to a ton, and once a brand works in your appliance, stay with it.

Pellets are hygroscopic and this is the single most common way a ton gets ruined. Above roughly 8% moisture they swell, crumble, and bridge in the hopper or jam the auger; a bag torn in the garage over a damp autumn is a bag of sawdust by December. Store bagged pellets sealed, on pallets, off concrete, under cover — a ton is 50 bags and takes about the footprint of a standard pallet.

Two things not to do. Pellets are not a fuel for a wood stove — the fuel bed geometry and air supply are entirely different and the appliance is not listed for it. And multi-fuel pellets, corn, or cherry pits belong only in appliances specifically listed for them; burning them in a wood-pellet stove voids both the safety listing and the emission certification, and corn in particular produces a corrosive, sticky ash that a wood-pellet burn pot is not built to handle.

Two to three tons for a typical home using a pellet stove as the main heat source, more in a cold climate or a large house. Work it from consumption: pellet stoves burn roughly 1–5 lb/hr depending on setting, so a bag a day is a moderate winter rate and three bags a day is running flat out.

Can wet pellets be used?

No. Pellets absorb moisture readily, and once they swell past about 8% they crumble, bridge in the hopper, and jam the auger — and even when they feed, a wet charge burns poorly and smokes. There is no drying them out. Store bags sealed on pallets under cover, and treat a torn bag left in a damp space as a loss.
