Will a pellet stove work during a power outage?

Short answer: not by itself. A pellet stove's feed auger, combustion and room-air blowers, igniter, and control board need electricity. A battery backup or generator can keep it running, but size from the stove's manual or nameplate and measure a full startup cycle rather than trusting a generic wattage.
Pellet and cordwood stoves behave differently
A freestanding cordwood stove can usually continue producing heat without electricity, although an optional convection blower stops. A pellet stove actively meters fuel and moves combustion air, so loss of power interrupts the controlled burn. Some models offer a manufacturer-approved battery system, but that is a model-specific feature rather than a property of pellet stoves generally.
Size backup power in watts and watt-hours
First find the maximum input watts or amperes in the manual and on the nameplate. Startup can draw more than the steady burn because the electric igniter is on. For a battery, measure or estimate energy as average running watts × hours, then add margin for inverter losses and battery aging. A 100 W average load for eight hours is 800 Wh before those losses; that example is math, not a stove rating.
A plug-in power meter can capture steady draw, but it must be rated for the stove and will not replace the manufacturer's maximum figure. Choose an inverter whose continuous and surge ratings exceed the measured startup cycle. Sensitive electronic controls may also require the waveform specified by the stove manufacturer.
Battery or generator?
- Battery backup: quiet, indoor-safe, and automatic if the approved system behaves like a UPS. Runtime is finite, so calculate watt-hours and test it before winter.

Plan for shutdown, not only runtime
Reserve enough battery energy or fuel for the stove's normal shutdown cycle. Cutting power while pellets are still burning can stop the combustion blower and allow smoke into the room. Follow the manual's outage and shutdown procedure, keep smoke and carbon-monoxide alarms working, and never run a portable generator in a house, garage, shed, or near openings.
