Ash content

Ash content is the incombustible mineral fraction left after fuel burns, quoted as a percentage by weight. For pellets it defines the fuel grade (under 1% for Premium); for cord wood it is why a stove needs its ash pan emptied every few days in season.

High-ash fuel clinkers up pellet burn pots and buries a wood fire’s coal bed, cutting airflow and efficiency. In a pellet appliance, moving from 1% to 3% ash fuel roughly triples the cleaning workload.

A modest bed of ash in a wood stove is actually useful — it insulates the coal bed and helps overnight burns — but beyond an inch or two it crowds the firebox and can hold the door ajar; certified stoves are tested and rated on reasonable maintenance.

Where ash comes from

Ash is the mineral fraction a tree took up from the soil — calcium, potassium, magnesium, phosphorus, and silica — plus whatever dirt was picked up during felling, skidding, and handling. Those minerals do not burn, so they end up in the pan whatever the appliance.

Bark is where most of it sits. Bark carries several times the mineral content of clean heartwood and collects grit from the ground, which is why debarked sawmill residue makes low-ash pellets and whole-tree material makes high-ash ones, and why unsplit bark-heavy rounds leave more ash than clean split hardwood.

The percentages sound small until you multiply them out. A cord of hardwood at around 0.5–1% of dry weight leaves roughly 20–50 lb of ash across a winter’s burning. A ton of Premium pellets leaves about 20 lb; the same ton at Utility grade leaves 120 lb, all of which has to pass through the same burn pot.

What it does to the appliance

In a pellet stove the failure point is the burn pot. Ash rich in silica and potassium can fuse at pot temperatures into hard glassy clinkers that plug the small combustion-air holes; the fire goes lazy and smoky, the stove may throw a flame-failure error, and owners generally conclude the machine is broken. It is fuel, not hardware. Fine ash also coats the heat exchanger, where a thin insulating film measurably cuts heat into the room and pushes flue temperature up.

In a wood stove a shallow ash bed is genuinely useful. An inch or two insulates the floor of the firebox, keeps the coal bed hot, and makes overnight burns and morning relights easier. Past two inches it starts working against you: it crowds the firebox so you load less wood, it buries the primary air inlets and the air-wash slot so the glass blackens, and eventually it prevents the door closing squarely against its gasket.

The practical cadence is a scrape of the pellet burn pot every day or two on Standard fuel and weekly on Premium, and a wood stove ash pan emptied every few days in the depth of the season — always with the fire out or well down, never mid-burn.

Handling it without burning the house down

This is where wood heating kills people, and the mechanism is always the same: ash that looked cold was not. Fine ash is an excellent insulator, and embers buried in it can stay hot enough to ignite paper or wood for several days after the fire went out. A shop vacuum, a cardboard box, a plastic bin, a paper bag, or a bucket left on a wooden deck are all standard ways a house burns down a week after the last fire.

Use a metal container with a metal lid, carry it outdoors, and set it on concrete or bare earth well away from the building, the woodpile, the deck, and anything under an eave. Leave it closed for at least several days — a week is better — before disposing of the contents. Wet the ash if you are in a hurry, and never use a vacuum that is not specifically rated for hot ash.

The same reasoning applies to where the pan lands while you are working. A hot ash pan set on a hearth pad is fine; set on carpet, a rug, or a wood floor beyond the pad for “just a minute”, it is the reason floor-protection dimensions extend in front of the door.

Using wood ash

Wood ash is a legitimate soil amendment. It is alkaline — around pH 10–12 in solution — and its neutralising power is roughly a third to two-thirds that of agricultural lime by weight, so it raises soil pH and supplies potassium, calcium, and trace minerals. Spread thinly on a vegetable garden or lawn in autumn or early spring, worked in rather than left on the surface.

The limits matter more than the benefits. Do not use it around acid-loving plants — blueberries, azaleas, rhododendrons, potatoes — and do not apply it to soil that is already alkaline; test first rather than guessing, because over-liming is hard to reverse. Keep it away from seedlings and out of compost in quantity, where it drives off nitrogen as ammonia.

One absolute exclusion: only use ash from clean, untreated wood. Ash from painted, pressure-treated, glued, or salt-soaked driftwood carries heavy metals and salts that do not belong in a food garden, and ash from a stove that has been used to burn household rubbish should go in the bin, not the beds.
