Short answer: a cord-wood stove needs no electricity and burns the cheapest fuel you can source yourself, but demands physical labor and hands-on fire management. A pellet stove automates feed rate and airflow for steady, low-maintenance heat, but depends on purchased pellets and mains power. Neither is "better" — they suit different households.

Fuel: what you buy and how you handle it

Cord wood is often the cheapest heating fuel available, especially if you cut and split your own, but it takes real storage space and real labor — splitting, stacking, and seasoning for six months to two years before it burns clean.
