Installing a wood stove: clearances, hearth pads, and chimney basics

Short answer: a safe wood stove installation comes down to clearance to combustibles, a code-compliant hearth pad, and a correctly sized chimney system — and every one of those is ultimately set by the stove's specific listing and your local building code, not by a general guide like this one. Treat what follows as background for an informed conversation with a professional installer and your local code office, not a substitute for either.

Why clearances exist

Wood doesn't need to reach open-flame temperatures to eventually ignite. Repeated, prolonged low-level heating slowly lowers wood's ignition temperature over months or years — a process called pyrolysis — which is why "that wall has never felt hot" is not evidence a clearance is safe to ignore. Clearance requirements exist specifically to keep combustible framing, trim, and furnishings below the temperatures that cause this slow degradation, not just below the temperature of an obviously dangerous burn.

Two different clearance numbers

NFPA 211 sets a conservative default clearance for an unlisted or generically radiant stove — commonly cited around 36 inches to combustible walls and ceilings — but almost every certified stove sold today carries its own tested, listed clearances, usually considerably less than that default thanks to heat shields, air-gapped rear jackets, and convection design. The stove's listing label and installation manual state the exact clearance for that specific model; those manufacturer figures, not a generic rule of thumb, govern the installation. Listed wall protectors (specific air-gapped panels, not just "some tile") can reduce clearances further by defined, tested fractions — again per the manual, not by estimation.

Hearth pads

The floor beneath and around a stove needs noncombustible protection from embers and radiant heat — a hearth pad. Requirements differ by stove: some models with low bottom-heat output need only basic ember protection, while others require an insulating pad rated to a specific R-value. The pad must also extend a defined distance beyond the stove's sides and front-loading door — commonly on the order of 8 inches at the sides and 16 inches at the front under typical US listings, though the specific stove's manual is the authority, not this generalization. A decorative rug is never a substitute, and plain sheet metal is not sufficient where an R-value is specified.

Stove pipe vs. Class A chimney

These are two different products, not interchangeable names for "the pipe." Stove pipe (sometimes called a chimney connector) is single- or double-wall pipe that connects the stove to the chimney and is only permitted to run through open room space — it may not pass through a wall, floor, ceiling, or window. Where the flue needs to penetrate a ceiling, attic, or roof, listed Class A chimney — insulated, high-temperature-rated pipe — or an existing, properly lined masonry chimney takes over. Chimney height and termination follow NFPA 211's rules (informally summarized as "10-3-2": terminating at least 3 feet above the roof penetration and at least 2 feet above any part of the structure within 10 feet), and an undersized or too-short flue is one of the most common causes of poor draft and smoke spillage complaints.
