How to choose a stove for 1,200–2,000 sq ft
At this size the stove usually runs long hours, so the catalytic-versus-non-catalytic question matters more than in a den or shop. A combustor re-burns smoke at low firebox temperatures, which is what keeps a damped-down overnight burn clean; a plain secondary-burn stove is cleanest in its mid-to-high output range and gives up the most exactly where whole-home heaters spend their nights. Hybrids hedge by doing both — which is why they crowd the top of this list.
