Cleanest-Burning Wood & Pellet Stoves
The 2020 NSPS caps room heaters at 2.0–2.5 g/hr of particulates, but the cleanest certified stoves test at a fraction of that. A low certified number is a lab result on dry test fuel — real-world cleanliness still depends on burning seasoned wood (under 20% moisture) and not choking the air supply — but between two stoves operated the same way, the lower-emission design wins.

Are all of these stoves EPA certified?
Yes — every model listed is on the EPA's current certified wood heater list and meets the 2020 NSPS emission limits. Previously certified (out of production) models are excluded from rankings.
How accurate are the heated-area estimates?
They are starting points, not promises: peak certified output divided by 25–35 BTU/h per square foot, the common rule of thumb for a reasonably insulated home in a mixed climate. Poor insulation, high ceilings, cold climates, and chopped-up floor plans all shrink real coverage — the sizing calculator lets you adjust for those.
